In version 7.2 we have redesigned the list import feature making it easier to import an existing list of subscribers. You can simply put your existing list into a file that has a header row and import it into the mailer. The mailer will then allow you to map all your data to the correct fields that you have setup in the mailer. So now importing is as simple as 1, 2, 3.
