Creating your own mailing list is the most effective way.
I have been in online marketing field for sometime now and in my experience it is true. Never add a person to your mailing list unless he demanded it himself. Also adding unknown people to your mailing list increase the chance of your domain being flagged as SPAM.

Sending mail to addresses from a bought database never do good in your sales. Sending 100 people who subscribed your mail newsletter does good than sending it to 1000 strangers, most of whom will definitely mark you as spam. So it is always better to keep a good active mailing list in email marketing.

The double opt in feature really does the job.
I have had many incidents in which people ids of others, and them are complaining about the newsletters.
Since then I have been using the double opt in feature for my mailing list.
I dont know if new email marketers follow the rule of not being pushy.
All they do is try to expand their mailing list.
I will refer this post to my friend marketers.
